PREMIER PIRATES!

Published Mon 20 Sep 2021

PASC have secured the Premiership and the automatic promotion that comes with it on a drama filled final day of the State League 2 season. Going into the final round, the Pirates Seniors sat just one point behind league leaders Adelaide University knowing that they needed to defeat Gawler at Karbeethan Oval and rely on Seaford Rangers to do them a favour against the seemingly indestructable Uni.

Adelaide Uni struck early in their game vs Seaford with an 8th minute strike while the Pirates toiled away in Gawler without reward. Pirates got the breakthrough they desired right before half time with Gus Williams prodding home from a tight angle after some aerial ping pong in the penalty area. In the second half, Pirates came our roaring and quickly blew away their hosts with goals from Matt 'Munch' Marchioro and a second goal to Williams, 3-0 up at the 50 minute mark.

The game took a sour turn on 61 minutes as two goal hero Williams received a straight red card following a tussle with Gawler's L. Centrone, who was also dismissed. However the Pirates took this in their stride as Nick Mavromatis put the result beyond doubt with a left foot free kick in the 65th minute. With the result in Gawler practically secured, the attention turned back to University Ovals and on 69 minutes, Seaford drew level. The next twenty minutes seemed like an age for the Pirates faithful with late consolation penalty to Gawler the least of their concerns. With 3 minutes to go, news came through that the Uni game had ended 1-1 to cue jubliant scenes on the sidelines by Pirates fans. The Seniors kept their composure until the final whistle before kicking off their own celebrations. A hugely emotional occasion for everyone involved, a day 3-years in the making!

Huge congratulations to everyone involved. A thoroughly deserved title.

It was a perfect day allround for all 3 of our State League teams. The Reserves demolished Gawler 5-0, a result that gives them a great chance to secure the double chance in their final game of the season against Noarlunga on Wednesday. The U18s also secure a win and in turn guaranteed a finals berth for the first time in 3 seasons. Their two remaining catchup games will be an opportunity to keep their form going ahead of the finals.
