~ Club History - A Look Back in Time ~

One Man's Opinion

The Soccer writer for the ‘Port Adelaide News’ who wrote under the pseudonym of ‘The Skipper’ was not afraid to put his thoughts into print.

In the papers edition of 21/5/1926 he wrote about the Port Reserve team:

‘I am of the opinion that several of this team will make good whilst at the same time there are some who are useless and the sooner the selectors procure men to take their place the better it will be for all concerned.’

Club Event of the Year

~ Getting to Know You - The Committee ~

Also, each edition we'll be sharing a bit about members of the club committee. This way you get to know who the people are that are driving this great club to be the best club in the country!

What is your name?

David Arnold

What is your role on the committee?

Vice Chairperson

What inspired you to become a member of the club committee?

I accepted an offer to join the committee as Miniroos Coordinator in 2017 as I saw how much potential our Club has to be a leader and example setter in both South Australian football and the local community as a whole

What do you hope to achieve as a member of the committee?

After 6 years on the committee I am pretty happy with what I have achieved so far but I still have a very long to-do list! I think if I am able to walk away from the Club and it continue to function seamlessly without me, I'll know my work is done 😊

How long have you been involved with soccer?

My dad is a football nut so I have been involved pretty much my entire life. I grew up in the UK and first played for my Primary School before playing for two years at a Club called Chadderton Park before emigrating to Australia when I was 12 where I then played at Modbury Vista for 15 seasons. Then I played indoor for 10 years with a great bunch of lads collectively known as The Yahoos

What is your favourite soccer memory?

Being at Maine Road for my first (and only) Manchester derby in September 1989 and seeing City smash United 5-1! And who can forget the scenes at Gawler in 2021 when my beloved Pirates won the League on the last day!

Do you have a favourite soccer team or player?

Manchester City and Rochdale are my main two, and of course Adelaide Utd. I won't bore you with my entire list of favourite Citeh players but right now, no one can touch Kevin de Bruyne for me, what a player!

Have you ever played soccer? If so, what position did you play?

Being left footed I ended up at either left back or left midfield a lot. But as I could 'do a job' in most positions, I was a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none

Have you been involved with any other sports or activities? If so, which ones?

I'm a big fan of running, wish I had more free time to do more runs than I do. I try to keep fit with various outdoor crossfit activities. Gave cricket a go in high school but I wasn't very good

What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of soccer?

Spent 6 years in an alternative rock band in my late teens-early twenties, also did a bit of amateur theatre in my teens which gave me the confidence to talk in front of crowds. Also I am a massive pro-wrestling nerd and love to get away for camping trips with the family in our 1978 Camper Trailer
